Privacy Policy
SafeCape provides community safety information, area alerts and traffic context for the Western Cape. This policy explains the information we process and the choices available to you.
Information we collect
- Account information: your email address, authentication identifiers and account status when you register or sign in.
- Watched areas and preferences: areas you save and whether notifications are enabled for them.
- Community reports: the area, category, description, approximate time, confidence selection and any public-source link you submit.
- Notification information: a browser push-subscription endpoint, encryption keys, browser information and account association when you enable alerts.
- Security information: limited technical data and one-way identifiers used to detect spam, abuse and repeat submissions. SafeCape does not intentionally store a reporter’s raw IP address as a public report field.
How we use information
We use information to operate accounts, save watched areas, deliver requested alerts, moderate and corroborate reports, prevent abuse, improve reliability and comply with legal obligations. Reports remain pending until reviewed or independently corroborated under SafeCape’s moderation rules.
Public information
Verified or corroborated reports may display the reported area, incident category, description, approximate time, source class and confidence. Your email address, push-subscription details and account identifier are not displayed publicly.
Service providers
SafeCape uses service providers to run the application, including Vercel for hosting, Supabase for authentication and data storage, Google Maps for maps and traffic context, and Resend for transactional email. These providers process information under their own terms and privacy policies. Public official or community sources may be linked with attribution.
Retention and security
We retain information only as long as reasonably needed for the purposes above, safety review, dispute handling and legal compliance. We use access controls, encrypted connections and server-side credentials, but no online system can be guaranteed completely secure.
Your choices and rights
You can disable browser notifications, remove watched areas and log out at any time. You may request access, correction or deletion of your personal information by emailing accounts@safecape.co.za. Some records may be retained where required for safety, fraud prevention or law.
Children
SafeCape is not directed to children under 13. Do not submit personal information about a child unless necessary for a legitimate safety report and lawful to do so.
Location and emergencies
SafeCape works primarily with selected area names. If location features are added, permission will be requested before device location is accessed.
Changes and contact
We may update this policy as SafeCape develops. The effective date above will change when material revisions are published. Questions may be sent to accounts@safecape.co.za.
